FAQs
What is a TENS machine and how does it work for labour?
A TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) machine delivers small, gentle electrical pulses through electrode pads placed on your lower back. These pulses work in two ways - they stimulate the body's natural endorphin release, and they interrupt pain signals travelling to the brain, reducing your perception of pain during contractions. You remain in complete control of the intensity at all times.
When should I start using my TENS machine?
We recommend beginning as early as possible in labour - as soon as you think things are starting. The machine is most effective when used from the early stages, as it builds up your body's natural pain-relieving response. Starting too late in active labour reduces its effectiveness. We also recommend practising after 36 weeks so you feel confident using it on the day.
Does it hurt?
Not at all. Most people feel a gentle tingling or buzzing sensation, which can be adjusted up or down to suit your comfort. Your machine starts on a medium setting, and you can increase or decrease the intensity using the +/- buttons. At the peak of a contraction, you can press the boost button for a stronger surge of sensation to help carry you through.
Is it safe for me and my baby?
Yes. The TENS machine is a drug-free, non-invasive form of pain relief with no known risks to you or your baby. It is TGA registered and has been used widely in maternity care for decades. We do recommend reading through the contraindications in the product manual before use, as there are some medical conditions or circumstances where a TENS machine may not be suitable.
When should I book and what if I don't end up using it?
We recommend securing your hire by around 30 weeks pregnant, with your machine arriving at 36 weeks - giving you time to feel comfortable with it before labour begins. Your hire is fully refundable at any point up until your machine is sent to you.
