This mumma knew she needed to lean into herself, come to @calmbirth and learn how powerful her body is. She contacted me at the last minute after trying to find a local course (without success), knowing she needed to empower herself. She told stories of long-held trust issues with her body, and this being a 'surprise' pregnancy had her on the back foot. But she put the work in, committed herself to the practice and left her birth feeling "in awe" of herself. Read on for the details 👇

✨Birth Story ✨

"Hi Elly - just wanted to update.

We had our beautiful baby girl Rylee Anne-Maree Darlington on 17/02/26 at 0117hrs weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces. 53cm long and 35.5cm head circumference. She is pure perfection.

My hindwaters spontaneously broke on my due date at 4am. We has a 44 hour long latent labour phase with a 5 hour active labour phase, 8 mins pushing no pain relief other than TENS, water injections (once because that pain is worse than childbirth 😂) and the use of the shower/bath. Calm birth helped so incredibly much with our education and understanding of the process. Jayden was so confident in helping. I had a couple days use of the TENS machine and it was truely so helpful! The breathing and visualisation made such a difference." (continued in comments below).

Babywearing often challenged me when I had my first baby. I didn’t know this community existed, and honestly… I really wish I had. I felt overwhelmed by carriers, confused about fit, and just couldn’t find my groove. I made so many mistakes.

Now I know: it doesn’t have to be that hard.

Something that always stood out for me was not necessarily their ‘calm’ or ‘composed’ demeanour through labour, it was their ability to walk into the discomfort head on. While pregnant with my third baby, I was fortunate enough to read one of my now favourite books by @rheadempseybirth ‘Birth With Confidence’. She speaks so eloquently about how to get friendly with pain and how to stretch your capacity. It’s the first book I recommend to any pregnant person that asks.

So this is my message: get comfortable with being uncomfortable!

Got some absolute rippers out of the @raisedgood Parenting Summit over the last week. I love this quote particularly from @droscarserrallach. I teach this very thing in my @calmbirth course. When we used to live in villages we received imprints of mothering and learned skills to equip us for when we moved into our own mothering era. It would have felt instinctual and natural.

Perhaps this is where we get the idea that we’re ‘failures’ because we feel like we don’t know what we’re doing, but we have this biological wiring that tells us we should know. Society is different now, and we are more isolated as mothers than we have ever been.

So, the next time you feel those dark thoughts creeping in, remind yourself you’re doing it in a completely different way and show yourself some compassion. Because mothering is a learned skill. We are ALL learning every day 🌸

I can’t describe the deep reverence and connection I felt through the day. I felt so held, and so loved. I’m breastfeeding for the third time with my littlest babe 🤱🏼 through all the engorgement, soaked breast pads, nipple pain, vasospasm, mastitis, nipple shields, nip lash, cracks, expressing, booby trapped naps, cluster feeding and leaking, I am so grateful to my body that I have been able to nourish all three of my children. It has been a challenge every single time, and rarely Instagram worthy. But there’s nothing quite like looking down at your beautiful little chick feeding while she gazes into your eyes and smiles (and subsequently sprays milk everywhere) 🥹
